Law enforcement in Sacramento are working a shooting incident that broke out on the evening of April 18 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area at the moment law enforcement were breaking up an unauthorized event of hundreds of attendees.
What Led to the Shooting
Law enforcement first arrived at the Arden-Arcade park at about 6:30 Saturday evening after getting calls of individuals who may have had concealed firearms. After that, a second call came in mentioning a potential altercation breaking out inside the park.
Aerial units was sent to survey the area but reported no active disturbance. However, deputies found that an enormous crowd had congregated at Howe Park in an unauthorized manner.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Deputies moved to clear the area by surrounding the park and broadcasting over loudspeakers directing the hundreds present to clear out. Around 15 minutes were allotted for individuals to vacate.
As the crowd was being cleared that 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition echoed through the night. The rapid succession of shots caused mass panic. Deputies wasted no time in identifying shooting victims.
Four People Shot
When the dust settled, four people were discovered with shooting injuries. The shooting victims — a group of one female and three male victims all reportedly in their 20s at the time of the incident — were transported to local Sacramento hospitals. Medical teams noted that two victims were in serious condition, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one person's injuries were considered minor. In a positive development, all four were in stable condition.
Metro Fire Sacramento were called to the scene and assisted with medical triage those who had been shot before they were taken to the hospital.
Physical Evidence
The primary shooting scene seemed to have taken place adjacent to the Cottage Way side of the park near the local Home Depot on the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Crime scene investigators discovered additional spent rounds throughout the Cottage Way area. This ballistic evidence pointed to that at least one of the shooters had been shooting in a southerly direction from Cottage Way targeting the Home Depot building and parking lot. The nearby Home Depot was placed on lockdown for a period of time. CSI units alongside detectives continued working well into the night.
Suspects Detained
Information relayed over police scanner frequencies indicated that a Kia vehicle had been stopped in Solano County California. Four occupants were stopped and detained. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to Solano County to collect the individuals for formal questioning. Video reviewed at the scene showed that two shooters had been involved.
